How did you become interested in Ag?

I was born and raised on the family farm, and grew up helping my Dad with every step of the crop production process. I logically decided to study Agronomy and received my undergraduate degree from South Dakota State University.

Your prior work experience:

I had the great opportunity to have three internships during my undergraduate career. I worked as a sales intern with Midwest Seed Genetics, as a corn breeding intern with Monsanto in Spencer, IA and as a Corn Rootworm Specialist intern for Croplan Genetics (Land O’ Lakes).

Hobbies/Interest:

I play lead guitar and vocals in a 50’s and 60’s three piece band and play guitar, trumpet, and vocals in a ten piece show band.  I also co-own a sound and lighting company and set up & run shows for many regional and national acts. The bands and sound company keep me busy traveling on most weekends.

What do you think are some of the challenges in the future of agriculture?

After my internships with Monsanto and Cropland Genetics I find it apparent that technology is the way of the future for the American farmer. As most major corn companies continue to offer few or no conventional varieties of seed, the world must accept GMO’s. This will be a challenge to the public. The American farmer’s challenge will be to sort through all of these technologies and select the best technologies for their acres.
