Seed Production Procedures

for

Iowa State University Research Foundation Varieties

1.       Contact the Iowa Crop Improvement Association (ICIA) before planting for an application packet to grow Registered, Certified, or Quality Assurance (QA) seed.

2.       For Registered seed production, plant Foundation seed.  For Certified seed production, plant Foundation or Registered seed.  For QA seed plant Foundation, Registered, or QA seed.  Be sure the seed is tagged with these labels when purchasing the seed.  Save the label following planting to establish proof of seed origin and class.

3.       Select clean, weed-free ground.  Check the ICIA seed certification requirements to see if the field meets all of the requirements.  A complete copy of the requirements can be requested from Eileen Wuebker at the ICIA office.

·         It is best if you did not have soybeans planted in this field the previous year.  If you did, it must have been the same variety and ICIA would have needed to pass certification on this field.

·         For isolation your soybean field must be separated by 5 feet or a permanent fencerow from any other drilled or rowed soybeans.

4.       Clean the planting equipment before planting.

5.       Submit an Application for Field Inspection and Seed Production Agreement to ICIA.  This application is for a pre-harvest inspection of your production field.  At this time you may also request an optional bloom inspection. The GPS coordinates of the field must also be provided at this time.

6.       Rogue the field for other crops, varieties, and weeds.

7.       Make sure the field inspection by an ICIA representative is completed before harvesting.

8.       Clean the combine, transporting equipment, and storage facilities to remove crop and weed seeds before harvesting seed fields.

9.       Have the seed conditioned by an approved seed conditioning plant or by conditioning equipment owned and supervised by the applicant.  Contact Doan Schmitz or Eileen Wuebker at ICIA office to discuss your seed conditioning and labeling options.

10.   Complete and send in a Lot Conditioning Record.  An official sample will be taken and tested.  If you participate in ICIA’s Approved Conditioner program you may be able to submit your own samples and print your own tags.

11.   The seed production process is completed only when Registered, Certified, or QA labels are attached to the seed bags.
