Iowa Seed Directory

The Iowa Seed Directory provides information on the production and conditioning of seed in Iowa.  This directory represents seed grown in 2010 and available for purchase for the 2011 production season. The directory has two purposes for its publication 1) to provide a complete available listing of all fields that have met certification requirements and 2) be a useful and convenient resource for prospective buyers of seed who are attempting to locate supplies. The listings in the directory include Approved Conditioners and Certified, Quality Assurance, and Native Species Seed.

A preliminary directory is released in late summer to give information of seed sources before field inspections are complete. The seed produced on the acres listed in the directories cannot be considered as Certified or Quality Assurance seed until it has passed field inspection, seed standards have been met, and the seed is properly labeled.

This directory provides information on the production of native species seed in Iowa for 2010. The certification of native species plants is not based upon genetic standards. Instead, as the name indicates, it provides a method for seed growers to certify the seed's collection source for the assurance of the consumer. This assurance is important to consumers since many native plants and seeds on the market do not have a guarantee of their place of origin. When a consumer purchases seed labeled with a Source Identified class yellow label, they can be confident of its geographic origin and area of adaptation.
