Alumni Profile : Chad Johnson

"The experience and education I received from the ISU Agronomy department was excellent preparation for law school and for my current role with Pioneer Hi-Bred."

"The agronomy curriculum teaches students to prioritize and balance competing factors when making cropping decisions or designing scientific experiments. At Iowa State I studied agronomy, but more importantly I learned how to think and reason."

I work for Pioneer Hi-Bred as an Intellectual Property Licensing Manager, where I negotiate and draft licensing agreements pertaining to germplasm and plant biotechnology, some of my main responsibilities include negotiating agreements to allow our researchers access to new technology. Additionally, I help support Pioneer’s business acquisition efforts and joint venture efforts, including GreenLeaf Genetics.

While at Iowa State I received both a bachelors and masters degree from the Iowa State University Agronomy Department. Following graduate school at ISU, I received my law degree from Drake University in Des Moines. I am presently licensed to practice law in Iowa and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The experience and education I received from the ISU Agronomy department was excellent preparation for law school and for my current role with Pioneer Hi-Bred.

The agronomy curriculum teaches students to prioritize and balance competing factors when making cropping decisions or designing scientific experiments. The ability to make decisions when faced with competing factors is important whether someone is advising a farmer or negotiating licensing agreements. At Iowa State I studied agronomy, but more importantly I learned how to think and reason.

The Agronomy Department presents students with limitless opportunities; one of my fondest memories at Iowa State was winning the National Collegiate Crops Judging Competition as an individual and as a team member. The agronomy curriculum at Iowa State is flexible and can prepare students for numerous careers, from law, to scientific research, to farming. However, the strongest part of the Iowa State Agronomy Department is the world class scientists and teachers that take an individual interest in the students, whether it is helping students pursue academic interests or opening their homes to students for hay rack rides and Christmas parties.
