Alumni Profile : William T. Frankenberger

“Obtain as much hands on experience in classes, such as laboratories, and select a research project that is of national importance… this will be important in presenting a seminar during a job interview.”

William T. Frankenberger
Professor of Soil Microbiology and Biochemistry at the University of California, Riverside

Frankenberger received his M.S. and Ph.D. from ISU. He is currently a professor of soil microbiology and biochemistry at the University of California, Riverside. He teaches courses on Principles and Applications in Bioremediation and Microbiology and Biochemistry of Soils. His research interests include microbial production of phytohormones in soils and bioremediation of selenium, perchlorate, and arsenic.

“I actually devoted a major part of my career to study microbial production of plant hormones, consisting of two different disciplines, integrated into one field. Without having taken the additional classes at ISU, this part of my career would never have happened. My advice to graduate students at ISU is to obtain as much hands on experience in classes, such as laboratories, and select a research project that is of national importance, rather than regional, since this will be important in presenting a seminar during a job interview. I am grateful to Dr. John Pesek (as head of the department) for allowing me to do my graduate studies at ISU. I am very proud to claim ISU as my alma mater.”

“In 1982, I received the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) Emil Truog Award for an outstanding dissertation in the field of soil science. I was promoted to Associate and Full Professor with 11 accelerations over normative time. I received five fellows from ASA, SSSA, AAAS, the American Institute of Chemists, and the American Society of Microbiology. I have received all three research awards from ASA/SSSA including the Soil Science Research Award, the Agronomic Research Award, and the Environmental Quality Research Award. Over all, I have published over 200 publications, including authored or edited 6 books, 195 technical journal articles, 3 patents, and presented over 300 scientific presentations. I’ve given over 20 radio and TV interviews and my work has been highlighted in various news media (>150) including US News and World Report, Discover magazine, the New York and Los Angeles Times newspapers. I have also started three high-tech companies as an offshoot of my research and hired over 20 UCR students. My accomplishments as a soil scientist are outlined at my website: http://envisci.ucr.edu/index.php?file= faculty/frankenberger/frankenberger.html"
