My primary teaching responsibilities are in upper level undergraduate courses in soil formation, soil-environmental relationships, and evaluation of soils for land use. Providing students with field and laboratory experience in soil science is a priority. My research concerns the impacts of agriculture and other land use on soil formation, toward the goals of sustainable land use and environmental conservation. To advance knowledge about the long-term condition of soils, studies in ancient to contemporary contexts are conducted. Knowledge of soils, agriculture, and resource management among indigenous cultures, especially in arid lands, is also investigated.
