Soil Mineralogy and Chemistry
http://www.public.iastate.edu/~mlthomps/homepage.html
My primary research responsibility is in environmental soil mineralogy. The program has accented the importance of the soil’s undisturbed physical organization on soil processes. In addition, it has included studies of contemporary soil processes that have large effects on soil morphology over long temporal scales (e.g., clay and organic matter movement, P transport, faunal activity). For the past decade, the program has focused on environmental applications of soil science, including studies of the sorption and transport of dissolved compounds and elements in soil (e.g., phosphorus, dissolved organic matter, trace metals, and polyaromatic hydrocarbons).
My primary teaching responsibility is for Agronomy 459, Soil Chemistry (offered each year), and Agronomy 555 and 555L, Soil Clay Mineralogy and Soil Clay Mineralogy Laboratory (offered in alternate years).
