Steven Fales

Forage crop management, quality, ecology, and utilization; plant-plant and plant-animal interactions

Facilitates research, teaching, and extension activities related to the Iowa State University Bioeconomy Initiative within the College of Agriculture and between the College and other entities on and off campus. These activities include all aspects of production, utilization, and economics associated with the use of plant materials for energy, chemical feedstock, and other novel applications. Dr. Fales maintains a working familiarity with biorenewables and bioeconomy-related projects at Iowa State University and at other institutions in the state and region, as well as with private and public organizations and state and federal agencies interested in the Initiative. He represents the program to various stakeholders. Research responsibilities include facilitating team building, project development, and project review at Iowa State University. Projects focus on systems for meeting the demands of a growing bioeconomy without compromising the existing food system in Iowa. Teaching involves participation in graduate courses in the Biorenewable Resources and Technology program, helping build the program, and graduate teaching in the ISU M.S. in Agronomy program (AGRON 592). He serves as Associate Director of the Office of Biorenewables Programs and the College of Agriculture’s representative to the Executive Council of the Office of Biorenewables Programs.
