Supplies: Sunflower seeds, sweet corn seeds, 6-inch pots, pot stakes

Plant five sunflower and sweet corn seeds in  pots and use stakes to designate treatments.

Treatment 1: Remove one cotyledon from each of the sunflower seedlings in one pot.

Treatment 2: Remove both cotyledons of the sunflower seedlings in one pot.

Treatment 3: Removal of the sunflower epicotyl (shoot above the cotyledons).

Treatment 4: Clipping of the hypocotyl (pinch the seedling off below the cotyledons).

Control sunflowers (no treatment applied)

Pinch or clip the corn seedlings at the soil surface.
