Plant Science Career Path

  • Studied Agronomy and Seed Science at Iowa State University
  • While attending ISU, Glen worked at the USDA Plant Introduction Station in Ames, Iowa
  • Glen also did several projects at the Iowa State Seed Science Center which taught himwhat was required for working effectively in seed research, production, and quality assurance
  • Currently works as the Parent Corn Quality Supply Coordinator for Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. - the world's largest seed corn company.
  • His responsibility at Pioneer is to ensure that worldwide Pioneer parent corn is produced in such a way to effectively and efficiently produce Pioneer hybrid corn
    • Parent corn is the seed used as females and males to be crossed in hybrid seed production field

"My work really involves the combination of many tasks, from working with and designing seed sizing systems, to proper data collection and analysis, to helping provide an educational resource to our seed production personnel on methods that produce high quality seed. It is the variety of work, and the variety of cultures from around the world that I have the opportunity to work with that is really what is exciting about my career opportunities."

  • Take every opportunity to work with plants, however that might be.

    If you have a hobby growing flowers on your patio, or the chance to work detasseling during the summer, or even working in a greenhouse, the exposure to the plant world will greatly help to build a foundation for a successful career.
