Receiving plant materials
a. Receiving transgenic plantlets
Transgenic plantlet shipping will be scheduled with you ahead of time. You will be notified by e-mail 1-2 weeks before plantlets are ready to be sent. The list below will give you an idea of the timing. You may receive shipments of plantlets over several different dates because plantlets develop at different rates. Remember that the plantlets cannot be shipped without your APHIS interstate movement permit/notification number.
| Service type | Estimated time to shipping transgenic plantlets |
|---|---|
| Maize (Agro) | 14 weeks after Agro infection |
| Maize (Biolistic) | 5 weeks after we receive your analysis/ranking data |
| Rice | 10 - 14 weeks after Agro infection |
| Soybean | N/A |
| Brachpodium | 3-4 months after receiving your constructs |
Maize:
If you intend to grow transgenic maize plants to maturity in your own greenhouse, keep in mind that you will need to plan for planting tester lines as well. These tester lines will serve as your pollen donor plants for transgenic silks, or silk recipient plant for transgenic pollen, since it is usually difficult to have a transgenic plant to produce its silks and tassel at the same time.
You will need to start planting 2-3 donor/recipient plants every 3 days, beginning when you receive an e-mail from us indicating your plantlets are almost ready to ship. This will ensure you a good flow of pollen/silk for your transgenic material.
Rice:
Nipponbare requires a 12:12 light/dark cycle. If your region of the country does not provide this, you must use an environmentally controlled growth chamber to grow your plants. Transgenic rice plantlets you receive from us will not set seed if grown at a daylength longer than 12 hours.
