Acetolactate Synthase (ALSase) Inhibitors

There are three very important herbicide families that inhibit the ALSase (AHASase) enzyme in plants.

Although the physiology and activity of these different families is frequently similar, the chemistry is quite different.

Because of the high frequency of herbicide resistant mutants in weed and crop populations to these chemicals, herbicide resistance is one of the drawbacks of these herbicides. Weed and crop populations often are cross-resistant all three families, but other populations are not.

Persistence in the environment and crop selectivity vary widely between herbicides both within and between these chemical families.
