Introduction
Herbicide family discovered by DowElanco
Flumetsulam (Broadstrike) in soybeans, corn wheat: many dicots (esp. velvetleaf,
cocklebur), grasses, yellow nutsedge; preemergence, postemergence
Physiology and Metabolism
Mode of action:
-Inhibition of ALS in meristems
-The ALS binding domain contains imidazolinone, sulfonylurea, as well as
triazolopyrimidine sulfonylanilide-specific domains
Mode of lethality
-starvation
Uptake and movement in plants
-ambimobile: apoplastic as well as symplastic
-soil uptake primarily through seedling roots
Basis of selective action between plants
-corn, wheat resistant to Post and Pre
-soybeans resistant to Pre, less resistant to Post
-cross-resistance with some weeds resistant to sulfonylureas, imidazolinones, other cases
no cross-resistance
-Selectivity basis: metabolism
Fate in the Environment
Soil
-half life: 30-60 days
-degradation influenced by soil pH and OM%: as soil pH increases, and soil OM% decreases,
flumetsulam becomes more available in soil solution
