IMG_2062My research aims to understand the relationship between soil health indicators, long-term management practices, and topographic position. This includes optimizing soil health tests for the Midwest, investigating how many soil samples are needed to represent a field, and where on the landscape to focus soil sampling efforts.

Soil health metrics include dynamic biological, chemical, and physical soil properties that respond quickly to management change. According to the USDA-NRCS, a “healthy” soil is one that has the continued capacity to provide ecosystem services and sustain plant, animal, and human life. Soil health is important in making recommendations to farmers and policy-makers to protect our soil for future generations.
