The main features of this toolbox are:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>hillslope position&nbsp;(calibrated to the U.S. Soil Survey),<\/li><li>relative elevation&nbsp;(a moving-window approach as described in Miller, 2014; middle elevation used for reference),<\/li><li>topographic position index (modified from Weiss, 2001; mean elevation used for reference),\n<ul>\n<li>TPI slope position,<\/li>\n<li>TPI landform class,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li><li>plus a couple of data classification tools that might come in handy.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"paragraph-widget paragraph-widget--text-html\"><div class=\"text-content\">\n<p> <code><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agron.iastate.edu\/glsi\/?ddownload=3953\" title=\"Download\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"ddownload-button button-yellow id-3953 ext-\">Download<\/a><\/code> the Relief Analysis toolbox <br><br>Includes instructions and a suggested color scheme for displaying hillslope position.<br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"paragraph-widget paragraph-widget--text-html\"><div class=\"text-content\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More about the Digital Classification of Hillslope Position<\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geographer-miller.com\/files\/cedar-hp-3D.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.geographer-miller.com\/files\/cedar-hp-3D.png\" alt=\"Hillslope Position\" class=\"wp-image-12041\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n<div class=\"paragraph-widget paragraph-widget--text-html\"><div class=\"text-content\">\n<p>Classification of hillslope position has a long history in soil geomorphology. However, its roots in tacit field knowledge&nbsp;has prevented its use in GIS. The model provided here has been calibrated and validated on soil scientists\u2019 observations in the field. The resulting maps of hillslope position represent base maps that can be used to (1) improve research on toposequences by providing explicit definitions of each hillslope element\u2019s location, (2) facilitate the disaggregation of soils currently mapped as complexes, and (3) identify map unit inclusions that exist due to subtle topographic variation. The base maps developed by the model can also help identify areas of possible mismapping, especially where soil boundaries cross topographic breaks. This information can enable the mapper to redefine many existing soil map unit boundaries, placing them more correctly at locations where defendable landscape breaks exist.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"paragraph-widget paragraph-widget--text-html\"><div class=\"text-content\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supplemental Materials<\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Demonstration Pack <\/strong>(<code><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agron.iastate.edu\/glsi\/?ddownload=3950\" title=\"Download\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"ddownload-button button-yellow id-3950 ext-\">Download<\/a><\/code>)<ul><li>A set of grid files for testing the Hillslope Position model without the need to create&nbsp;any of the prerequisite terrain derivatives.  <br><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Profile Curvature in GRASS (for those not familiar with&nbsp;GRASS) <\/strong><br> <code><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agron.iastate.edu\/glsi\/?ddownload=3955\" title=\"Download\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"ddownload-button button-yellow id-3955 ext-\">Download<\/a><\/code>  <ul><li>Using different analysis scales is key to correctly calculating hillslope position. Profile curvature is the one terrain derivative that we can&#8217;t do a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">user-specified analysis scale<\/span> in ArcGIS yet.
