About

Qi Mu’s research focuses on cloning and understanding the molecular mechanisms of the gene involved in plant height in sorghum and maize. Plant height is an important agronomic trait, which has been contributed significantly in semi-dwarf wheat and rice during Green Revolution. A Recombinant Inbred Line population in sorghum and a dwarf mutant derived F2 population in maize were used to narrow down the QTL region and identify the underlying gene. Gene knock-down using CRISPR technology will be applied in this project to confirm the gene function. In addition, the target QTL is one of the two QTLs contributing to pseudo-overdominance heterosis in sorghum plant height. Qi is also evaluating the effects of the two QTLs during sorghum growth to understand their dynamic contributions to heterosis. This work will not only improve our understanding on the mechanisms of pseudo-overdominance heterosis, but also enable breeders to select proper plant height during cultivar development.
