A huge congratulations is in order for Jacob Wright on receiving two SSSA scholarships. Jacob received the Golden Opportunity Scholarship and the Hubert Byrd Scholarship. The Golden Opportunity program, sponsored by ASA, CSSA, and SSSA, develops the agronomy, crops, soils, and environmental science professions by strengthening the next generation of leaders in the profession. Undergraduate students from across the world in associate or bachelor degree programs are considered. Specifically undergrads interested in graduate school.
The Hubert Byrd Scholarship had more specific requirements: Undergrad members with declared major in soil science or closely related soil science degree program, and who have completed their sophomore or junior years by the end of spring term of the year in which they are submitting a scholarship application. GPA of 2.5 or above. Nominees should have strong interests in science and business, and practical applications of their knowledge and skills.
The Hubert Byrd scholarship was established in memory of Hubert J. Byrd Sr., a prominent and highly respected soil scientist. By encouraging undergraduate students to major in soil science degree programs, the scholarship will help recruit top students into nationally recognized soil science programs to meet the expanding and diverse needs of this field. The SSSA Consulting Soil Scientists Division encourages soil science undergraduates to pursue a career in the field of professional consulting soil science to meet the various public needs and practical applications of this science.
A total of 25 students were selected for the Golden Opportunity scholarship, including other Iowa State students! As for the Hubert Byrd scholarship, only one other student was selected.
Each scholarship gives Jacob special perks. For the Golden Opportunity, he is paired with a mentor who is a society professional and has similar interests and careers goals as him. He will also receive financial support for traveling, lodging, registration, and other costs related to attending the SSSA annual meeting in San Diego. For Hubert Byrd’s, Jacob received a financial award.
Congratulations to you, Jacob, for all your hard work put in!
