Long-term Assessment of Miscanthus Productivity and Sustainability (LAMPS) Project

LAMPS will use a field-based approach to address the challenges facing Miscanthus establishment and production. The LAMPS experiment will consist of fields large enough to accommodate commercially available equipment similar to what Miscanthus producers will use. Further, we will use commercial fertilizer and fertilizing equipment to develop best management practices for maintaining productive Miscanthus stands.

Valeria Cano Camacho, a junior in agronomy,was presented the George Washington Carver Spirit of Innovation and Service Award on Sept. 21 in Ankeny. Cano Camacho was one of five undergraduate students nationwide to receive the award. This is the second year the award was presented as a tribute to the legacy of George Washington Carver, recognizing the efforts of young people striving to achieve their dreams and discovering the relevance in following in the footsteps of Carver — emulating his curiosity about life and nature, his generosity of spirit and his dedication to progress.

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University is a partner institution in a new, $104 million research center funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Led by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the project will study the next generation of plant-based, sustainable, cost-effective biofuels and bioproducts.

The DOE grant will form the Center for Advanced Bioenergy and Bioproducts Innovation, one of only four in the nation. The center will be a collaboration between Illinois’ Institute for Sustainability, Energy and Environment and the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology.

Evan H. DeLucia, the G. William Arends Professor of Plant Biology at the University of Illinois, will serve as the center’s director.
