Silt Content Image Gallery

Author: Bradley Miller

Silt content refers to the percentage by weight of mineral soil particles between 0.002 and 0.05 mm in diameter, measured within the soil material less than 2 mm in size. Silt, along with sand and clay, is one of the primary soil separates that determines texture and physical behavior.

Applied Relevance

Silt influences water retention, erosion potential, and soil workability. Soils high in silt typically have moderate water-holding capacity and are prone to compaction and crusting. Understanding silt content is critical for soil classification, hydrologic modeling, and agricultural and engineering decisions.
