Awards & Scholarships
IPSA Student Recognition Award. The award is presented by Independent Professional Seed Association. Applicants may be in their junior or senior year of high school, undergraduate, or graduate school.
IPSA administers the Myron “Ted” Asplin Foundation Scholarship. Selection will be based on a combination of academic achievement, community and agricultural involvement. Award amount: $750.
The Melville H. Cohee Student Leader Conservation Scholarship provides financial assistance to members of SWCS who are in their junior or senior year of full-time undergraduate study or are pursuing graduate level studies with a natural resource conservation orientation at properly accredited colleges or universities. It is administeredby the Soil and Water Conservation Society. Award amount: $1,000.
Graduate Student Recognition Awards
Agronomy Department Outstanding Graduate Student Award
The award is to recognize the efforts and accomplishments of a graduate student toward completing course work, research, professional development, and other departmental service activities in his or her time at Iowa State University. It is presented by the Agronomy Graduate Student Club. Application due Oct. 15.
The $500 award supports the early career development of women scientists in Quaternary studies. Female scientists in any field of Quaternary studies within two years prior to completing a Ph.D. are encouraged to apply.
Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award
The award is offered by the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS). The awards are to recognize and reward distinguished scholarship and research at the master’s level.
The award is offered by the Soil Science Society of America. The award recognize graduate student whose thesis research and graduate responsibilities utilize creative approaches to gain understanding and develop solutions for soil and water conservation and management problems. The recipient’s research must be in the area of soil and water management and conservation.
Geological Society of America Awards
It includes area of soil science in geological context of Quaternary geology and geomorphology. There are several possible awards:
- J. Hoover Mackin Award (Ph.D.)
- Arthur D. Howard Award (M.S.)
- Robert K. Fahnestock Memorial Research Award
- Farouk El-Baz Award for Desert Research.
IPSA Student Recognition Award
The award is presented by Independent Professional Seed Association . Applicants may be in their junior or senior year of high school, undergraduate, or graduate school.
The award is to recognize graduate students for outstanding research accomplishments as documented in resulting theses and dissertations. The Research Excellence Program is administered by the Graduate College with additional support from the Graduate and Professional Student Senate. Students must be graduating in the semester in which they are nominated.
J. Fielding Reed PPI Fellowship
Fellowships of $2,500 each will be awarded to deserving graduate students in soil and plant science. The Award is presented by the Potash & Phosphate Institute.
The award recognizes and encourage outstanding achievement by graduate students in teaching. The program is administered by the Graduate College with additional support from the Graduate and Professional Student Senate.
The award recognizes a superior dissertation by a doctoral student in the behavioral sciences (human or animal). Major Professors and faculty make nominations to the Dean of the Graduate College. Eligible dissertations must have been accepted by the Graduate College during calendar year.
The Annual Zaffarano Prize
The award recognizes superior performance in publishable research by an ISU graduate Student. Major Professors and faculty make nominations to the Dean of the Graduate College.
The award is offered by the Crop Science Society of America (CSSA). The award recognizes top-notch graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in crop science disciplines.
Graduate Student Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships are available through the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences web site.
Applications accepted for undergraduate and graduate students wishing to be selected for scholarships and fellowships offered by the ASA-CSSA-SSSA.
- L.R. Ahuja Ag Systems Modeling Fellowship. Amount award $2,000 to graduate student working in the field of soil biology or biochemistry or microbial ecology
- Francis and Evelyn Clark Soil Biology Scholarship
- Gerald O. Mott Scholarship. Amount award $2500 to student in crop sciences
- Harry J. Larsen/Yara Memorial Scholarship. Amount award $5000 for Meritorious Graduate Students in Practical Soil Fertility and Crop Production.
- Frank D. Keim Graduate Fellowship. Amount award $2500, nominees will have been selected by their department for the National Student Recognition Program to be eligible to apply.
Charles N.& Verna H. Brown Graduate Fellowship
The fellowship is offered by the ISU foundation. The student shall be a citizen of, or a permanent resident of The United States. The student shall be pursuing a graduate degree in agricultural meteorology.
C.R. Weber Award of Excellence in Plant Science
The fellowship is offered by the ISU foundation. Open to Agronomy graduate students in plant science on the basis of academic excellence and professional development. Contact Dr. Jianming Yu for more information
Frederick Soil Microbiology Award
The fellowship is offered by the ISU foundation. It is awarded to graduate students majoring in Soil Microbiology. The Senior Soil Microbiologist selects the recipient.
Josef F. Schuler Graduate Fellowship in Agronomy
The fellowship is offered by the ISU foundation. Scholarship rewards the academic excellence of graduate students in plant breeding who have graduated from an Iowa high school or college. Contact Dr. Thomas Lubberstedt for more information.
Kenneth E. Grant Scholarship
It provides financial aid to members of SWCS for graduate-level research on a specific conservation topic that will extend the SWCS mission of fostering the science and the art of soil, water, and related natural resource management to achieve sustainability. Award amount: $1300.

Peter J. Loesch Jr. Memorial Fund
The fellowship is offered by the ISU foundation. Funds for graduate students to travel to the regional corn breeding meetings.
