Agronomy Alumni Scholarship: Scholarships of varying amounts are awarded to students in agronomy on the basis of academic excellence, leadership activities, and professional potential. This scholarship fund was established and continues to be supported by Agronomy alumni.
Agronomy Professional Development Fellowships: Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis in order to support student activities that promote professional growth through structured mentorship in Agronomy research, teaching and/or outreach. Available to juniors and seniors with a GPA above 3.20, or sophomores with a GPA above 3.30.
Agronomy Teachers Scholarship: Two scholarships are awarded to students in agronomy on the basis of academic excellence, leadership activities, and professional potential. This scholarship fund was established as an endowment by the agronomy undergraduate teaching and advising faculty members. Individual faculty members have continued to make annual contributions to help recognize outstanding students
Agronomy Travel Awards: These awards will be used to support academic travel to international destinations. The Agronomy Department will award a scholarship for
40% of the advertised cost of a travel abroad course or $2,000 for a semester
abroad. Specific application deadlines will be announced by the department. Students must have a GPA of 2.00 or higher and must be an Agronomy major to be eligible.
The Donald And Beverly Bunce Scholarship supports Agronomy students who strive to be top notch agronomists. It is awarded to students in good standing with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The Farmers Cooperative Company Scholarships are given to sophomores or juniors in Agronomy who are focusing on crop management and business. They must be residents of Iowa, in good standing with the University, and preferably members of the Agronomy Club.
The Dr. Detroy Green Scholarship is award to students interested in plant breeding and who have been involved in teaching. Dr. Green had successful career for 36 years working with student by teaching or as Dean at ISU. He retired from the University in 1995.
The Myron J. Iverson Scholarship in Sustainable Agriculture was established for those students seeking an agricultural degree, are residents of Iowa, have financial need and who demonstrate interest in Sustainable Agriculture.
The Manjit K. Misra Senior Seed Scholar is given in addition to the Iowa Seed Association Scholarships.
The Most Improved Junior Scholarship was established by Dr. Brent Pearce, who retired from our teaching faculty in 1998, and is presented each semester to the junior who has most improved his or her grade point average over the previous term.
The Joseph L. Robinson Memorial Scholarship was established in 1990 by Herman and Eunice Justice. This fund was endowed to provide an award to a new freshman or transfer student who shows leadership potential for a career in Agronomy. Dr. Robinson was a member of the Iowa State University Agronomy Department from 1920 to 1959.
The Greg Thiel Memorial Scholarship was established by Patricia Thiel and established in 2003 in memory of her husband, an Agronomy graduate from ISU. The recipient must be a resident of one of 27 Iowa counties and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
The Leo M. Walsh Scholarship In Agronomy, established in 2010, is awarded to sophomore, junior and senior Agronomy majors with a minimum GPA of 2.75. Preference is given to students in the soil-science option.
American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers: Two scholarship awards are given to juniors with an Iowa background and an interest relating to farm management and rural appraisal. Two students are nominated from each of the following departments: Agronomy, Animal Science, Economics, Agricultural Education and Studies, and Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering. This scholarship requires a separate application which is available in the Teaching Office (1126 Agronomy Hall) in December.
Clyde Black and Son Academic Scholarship for Agriculture: Scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence and demonstrated leadership. This fund was established by the families of Clyde and Julius Black to honor these two prominent agronomists of the seed industry.
Arden and Katie Campbell Scholarship Fund: Awarded to an Agronomy student and renewable up to three additional years.
W. H. and W. L. Colville Scholarship: Scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate student majoring in agronomy with crops as his or her primary field of interest. Academic excellence and having been employed as a student by the Agronomy Department are the primary selection criteria. This scholarship was established by Dr. Bill Colville to honor his father, a long-time farmer in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Bill was an excellent Iowa State student and leader, faculty member at the University of Nebraska, and was Head of Agronomy at the University of Georgia until he retired in 1988.
Des Moines Feed and Grain Club Scholarship: This scholarship will be awarded to a sophomore or junior in agronomy during odd years and in animal science during even years. Other criteria include Iowa residency, participation in campus activities, and GPA of 3.0 or higher.
E. R. Duncan Scholarship in Agronomy: This award is intended to cover in-state tuition, fees, and books. The recipient will be selected from among sophomores or juniors majoring in agronomy who have demonstrated scholastic ability, financial need, and leadership and professional potential by participation in university-related activities.
Ron and Ethel George Scholarship in Agronomy: This scholarship was established when Dr. George retired after a long and successful teaching career. Contributions by the George’s, friends, colleagues, and former students provide for this award.

Dr. John Joseph Hanway and Barbara Baldwin Hanway Scholarships: Two scholarships are awarded to students in agronomy who have promise for a career in research. Preference shall be given to those pursuing a degree in soil chemistry.
George N. and Nellie Stromer Heald Scholarship in Agronomy: This scholarship is given to a student in agronomy during odd years.
Roland W. Holden Memorial Scholarships: Four scholarships are awarded to agronomy students who are graduates high schools in the USA, have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, and have financial need. This scholarship was established by Corn States Hybrid Service, Inc. and friends and family of Mr. Holden.
Harold D. Hughes Memorial Awards for Writing Excellence: Awards are given for the the top five manuscripts in the local writing competition each spring. Selection of recipients is based on a written essay completed by the student as part of the local Agronomy Club competition to select the club representative for the national SAS-ASA manuscript contest. More information and a copy of the rules is available from the contest chairperson.
Iowa Crop Improvement Association Scholarships: Four scholarships are awarded to students in agronomy on the basis of general scholarship, student activities, and financial need. These scholarships are usually awarded to one freshman, one sophomore, one junior, and one senior.
Iowa Crop Improvement Association Seed Science Scholarship: One scholarship is awarded to an agronomy student who has Seed Science as a secondary major. This award is made on the basis of academic excellence, leadership, and demonstrated interest in seed science. The recipient is selected by the Iowa State University Seed Science Scholarship Committee. This scholarship requires a separate application which is available in the Teaching Office each fall.
Robert R. Kalton, Sr. Scholarship in Agronomy: A scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior in agronomy with a 3.0 or better GPA. This scholarship was made possible by a gift from Vivian Kalton and her son Robert, Jr. in honor of Robert Kalton, Sr. Dr. Kalton was a member of the Iowa State University Agronomy Department faculty early in his career, worked for industry for many years, then returned to Iowa State as an affiliate professor in 1992.
Don and Betty Kirkham Soil Science Award: Scholarship is awarded to seniors in agronomy who have an interest in soil science and who display the ideals of excellence in scholarship that are characteristic of Dr. Kirkham during his long and distinguished career in soil physics. Preference will be given to those students who plan to pursue graduate study in soil science. This scholarship was established upon his retirement by former graduate students, his wife who was an Iowa State University Professor in English, friends, and his daughter who is an agronomy professor at Kansas State University.
Charles F. Krull Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student majoring in agronomy with preference given to students of high academic standing and previous award recipients who have maintained good academic standing. This scholarship was established by Dr. Charles F. Krull as a means of expressing his gratitude for the education he received, and as a way to help undergraduates in their education.
George E. Lamp Sr. Memorial Award: This scholarship is awarded once every five years (next award in 2013). Financial need is the first consideration with preference given to students studying soil and/or water conservation.
Kenneth L. and Ruth M. Larson Scholarships: This award is given to an agronomy student. The recipient should be a graduate of a high school in the US, have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership activities, service in the community and/or extracurricular activities, and show outstanding potential for the agronomy profession. The scholarship’s sponsor, Dr. Ken Larson, retired in 1996 after a long and distinguished career as a teacher, advisor, researcher, and administrator at Iowa State.
Everett Leach Endowed Scholarships: Two scholarships are given annually. This award was established by CENEX-Land O’Lakes for juniors or seniors in agronomy on the basis of academic excellence, professional potential, and financial need.
Robert and Cecile Mitchell Scholarship Award: This scholarship is presented by Dr. Roger Mitchell in memory of his parents, Robert and Cecile Mitchell, who were long-time residents of Grinnell, Iowa. The scholarship is intended to cover the costs of one semester of in-state tuition. Roger was Iowa State Student Body Vice President as an undergraduate, was a faculty member in Agronomy at Iowa State, and was Dean and Director of Agriculture at the University of Missouri.
Roger L. Mitchell Scholarship: This is an award presented by Dr. Roger Mitchell, a B.S. and Ph. D. graduate in agronomy at Iowa State. Recipients of this award have a GPA of 3.0 or better, with preference to students demonstrating a desire to pursue international experiences through travel, second language study, or other means.
Jay J. Newlin Endowed Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior majoring in agronomy, with preference given to students who are concentrating in the study of crop science and who are U.S. citizens. This award is intended to cover most of the expenses for one academic year, including in-state tuition and on-campus room and board. Academic excellence, professional potential, and financial need are the selection criteria. This scholarship was established by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. to honor one of their founders for his contributions to agriculture.
Pioneer Agronomy Scholarships: Two awards were established through a gift from Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. Selection is based on demonstrated academic accomplishments and potential for a successful career in the field of agronomy.
Kiley Powers Farm Endowed Scholarships: Several awards are given to students in agronomy or seed science at Iowa State. This scholarship fund was established from the estate of Marie R. Powers.
Frank and Freda Riecken Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior studying soil morphology and genesis in the Department of Agronomy and who has demonstrated academic excellence in his or her work. Mrs. Riecken established this scholarship in memory of her husband who was a Professor of Agronomy at Iowa State. He was internationally known for his contributions to the field of soil science.
Wayne H. Scholtes Scholarship in Agronomy: Scholarships are awarded to agronomy students with strong academic standing, extracurricular activities, and leadership potential. Family and friends established this scholarship to recognize Dr. Scholtes’ tremendous interest in students and his outstanding contribution to teaching and research at Iowa State.
Levi and Maxene Spohnheimer Endowed Fund for Scholarships in Agronomy: Three scholarships will be awarded to outstanding agronomy students. This fund was established by Levi and Maxene to support programs in agronomy.
George Stanford Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student in agronomy who has shown high scholastic ability. Mrs. Stanford, family, and friends established this scholarship in memory of Dr. Stanford, who received his M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees in Agronomy at Iowa State in 1940 and 1947.
Stritzel Soil Fertility Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior interested in soil fertility or soil management. Dr. Stritzel worked as an Agronomy Extension Soil Fertility Specialist from 1950 to 1963 after which time he joined the teaching faculty. He taught senior level courses in fertilizers and soil management until his retirement in 1987, after a 37-year career at Iowa State University.

Western Seedsmen’s Association Scholarships: Four scholarships are awarded annually through the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences to sophomores in agronomy. Students must have a demonstrated long-term interest in agriculture through scholastic achievement and extra curricular activities. Scholarships are presented during the Western Seedsmen’s Association annual meeting in Kansas City, Missouri, in early November. Applications are available on-line and due in early March.
Louis M. Thompson Endowment for Agronomy: This endowment was created to honor Dr. Louis M. Thompson, who made many contributions to the Department of Agronomy and the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences during his august career at Iowa State University. Eligible students are sophomores, juniors, and seniors majoring in agronomy with a GPA of 3.2 or higher, demonstrated financial need, and potential for leadership. This award may be renewed during a student’s undergraduate program and may continue through one graduate degree in the form of a graduate fellowship, provided the student continually meets the criteria for the award.
The Ivan Wikner Scholarship in Agronomy: Established in 1997 and is awarded to students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and who have financial need.
H.K. Wilson Advanced Curriculum Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded in honor of Harold K. Wilson, a 1922 graduate in agronomy. This scholarship is to recognize an outstanding student in agronomy.
Wych Family Agronomy Scholarship: Available to students with a 3.3 grade point average who are residents of the Northwest portion of the State of Iowa and who were raised on a farm or have a farm background.
